Euflexxa
What is Euflexxa?
Euflexxa is a clear hyaluronic acid gel injected into the knee to improve lubrication and cushioning. It may help reduce osteoarthritis pain when simpler treatments have not worked. Your doctor or radiologist will advise if its suitable for you.
What happens during my Euflexxa?
A radiologist will call your name and bring you into the procedure room. The procedure is explained, and consent is confirmed. You can ask questions.
You will lie on the bed with your knee exposed. The skin is cleaned. Local anaesthetic may be used to numb the area. Ultrasound is used to guide a fine needle into the joint.
Euflexxa is injected slowly into the knee. You may feel pressure or brief discomfort.
A small dressing is applied. You may be observed for a short time. You can usually walk out and should keep activity light for the rest of the day.
How long will it take?
About 15 to 20 minutes for the visit
The injection takes 5 to 10 minutes.
Allow 30 minutes total for check in and aftercare.
If both knees or fluid drainage are needed, add 5 to 10 minutes.
Most courses are 3 injections, one week apart.
What are the possible side effects?
Some patients may have mild swelling, stiffness, or pain at the injection site. These are short term and usually settle with rest and ice. Seek care if you get fever, severe pain, fast swelling, rash, or trouble breathing.
Why choose Euflexxa?
Compared with cortisone and single-dose options, Euflexxa may offer:
- Longer lasting symptom relief for some patients
- Fewer systematic side effects since it works locally
- Good joint residence time for sustained benefit
- Non-animal origin, which lowers allergy risk
I have a referral to a different radiology service? Can I use this referral at Light Radiology?
If you have a referral to another imaging practice or organisation, we can still assist you as we put you, the patient first, and accept all referrals. If in doubt, please seek advice from your referring medical professional.
How do I prepare for my Euflexxa?
No special preparation. Eat and drink as normal. Wear clothing that allows easy access to your knee. Bring your referral and Medicare card. Tell us if you take blood thinners or have allergies. Plan light activity for the rest of the day.
Who is Euflexxa suitable for?
Euflexxa may be appropriate for:
- Adults with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis whose pain persists after exercise therapy and simple pain medicines
- People who cannot have or prefer to avoid cortisone or frequent anti-inflammatory tablets
- Patients wanting to reduce pain and keep function while delaying surgery
- Selected non-knee joints only after specialist review
- It can be used alongside other treatment as part of a plan your doctor sets
